As a leading national supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s relies on a large network of distribution centres operating 24 hours a day. With so many square metres to cover, effective loss prevention is obviously a challenge. At the same time, when the smooth running of each depot is crucial to profitability, security systems cannot be allowed to obstruct day-to-day operations.

When Sainsbury’s recognised that their analogue CCTV systems were no longer delivering the performance required, they turned to Amberstone. Their task was to design and install an IP security system for Sainsbury’s flagship depot that would improve image quality while integrating seamlessly with existing infrastructure.

The Solution

Working in close partnership with Sainsbury’s security team, Amberstone identified the key objectives that would steer the project – namely, to design a fully integrated IP CCTV system that would deliver not just improved performance but longevity too, to meet the company’s environmental commitments and to minimise disruption during and after installation.

Thanks to their flexible approach to problem-solving, Amberstone were able to devise a scalable solution that would work hand-in-hand with Sainsbury’s preferred network video recorder (NVR) platform. Having made a full analysis of the site, Amberstone deployed a range of IP cameras delivering a minimum of 1080p resolution, carefully selected and configured to suit each location, from narrow corridors to wide open spaces.

At Sainsbury’s request, Amberstone used their deep knowledge across all aspects of security technology to incorporate fully networked intercom, access control and fire exit control systems into the install.

The Result

Sainsbury’s has seen widespread and immediate benefits. Using the new IP CCTV system to monitor distribution centre activity both proactively and retrospectively, the greatly enhanced image quality has proved invaluable not just to loss prevention efforts but to health and safety monitoring and accident investigation.

At the same time, Amberstone have delivered a more efficient and greatly simplified infrastructure that not only saves time by automating important tasks and integrating parallel systems but also requires less power, less cabling and fewer man-hours lost to maintenance.

Having allocated their first two IP system installations to Amberstone, Sainsbury’s intend to extend this partnership to upgrade their remaining depots.

Amberstone delivered:

  • Enhanced loss prevention
  • Enhanced health and safety monitoring
  • Simpler networked infrastructure
  • Lower power usage and environmental impact
  • Lower maintenance costs and greater longevity

“Amberstone’s partnership approach and can-do attitude are really refreshing. They have supported us in not just delivering an IP solution to one location but delivering a full specification which meets all our current and foreseeable needs.

The Daventry project – which includes a control room, 350+ cameras, access control, intercom system and fire exit protection, all incorporated seamlessly onto the same network – has shown how partnering with the right company has really supported delivery and helped move from concept to reality”
